Most customers or clients have infected files which just triggered or send mails using PHPMail(), because it does not validate.  However, this is safer to use SMTP as it handles delivering messages smatter or better as SMTP function isn’t open and the email must be validated i.e, a real time email address and password must be written within the code then later verified by the mail server before the email is sent. This to an extent increases the authenticity of emails using WordPress.
